“Women disappear all the time. Nobody misses them. Immigrants. Whores from Russia. Thousands of people pass through Sweden every year.” (363)
Like every country, thousands of people immigrate to Sweden every year. This has been going on for centuries, and continues to do so today. As of 2013, the top 5 largest immigrant population into Sweden are: Finland, Iraq, Poland, Former Yugoslavia, and Iran. Despite what Martin Vanger says, Russia is 23rd in the top 25 highest immigrant population in Sweden last year.
As the graph shows, a lot of the immigration/emigration within Sweden, much like most European countries, was severely affected by the 2 World Wars that occurred. Sweden in World War 2 saw a great amount of immigration, mostly due to Finnish and Danish people fleeing the growing Nazi regime.
