"Why do you kill, Martin?"
"It's a choice that I made. I could discuss the moral and intellectual aspects of what I do; we could talk all night, but it wouldn't change anything. Try to look at it this way: a human being is a shell made of skin keeping the cells, blood and chemical components in place. Very few end up in the history books. Most people succumb and disappear without a trace."
"You kill women."
"Those of us who murder for pleasure- I'm not the only one with this hobby- we live a complete life."
This quote proves to me that Henrik has a serious mental disconfiguration. The thing about humans is just that; we don't seem extraordinary, but it is what we make of our experience that matters, even if just to ourselves. The tool to access this "human experience" that gives our life value is empathy, which Martin lacks completely.
Empathy is what initially brings Blomkvist and Salander together; it is what drives Blomkvist to complete the investigation of Harriet's story, and it is the powerful glue that keeps all of life together.
Empathy is what distinguishes good from evil, and determines who the true hero is.
Anita chooses to sacrifice her freedom for the safety of her sister Harriet, so she can escape the terror of their family. This deed required an enormous amount of empathy, which proves to safe Harriets life. It requires courage, and resilience, but empathy is the winning quality of a hero.
