Now, although this situation is altogether a special case this model appears in society all too often; a woman being taken advantage of by a man.
Men have asserted dominance over women in most societies over the course of time. It has been the role of the female to respect the man and do what he says. This is and has been changing since the 20th century, but some people refuse to change their views. This is seen very much so through writing, where it becomes very apparent what gender the writer is talking in.
In the case of Advokat Bjurman, he received a mentally unstable girl to be placed under his guardianship whom has control over very little aspects of her life if it is up to him. He decides to play an "adult game" with her, to try to earn her trust; he gets what he wants, she gets what she wants, and everybody is happy. Lisbeth saw a problem with this though. She represents more of the women of today, and the rebels of the forefront, who aren't afraid to take action themselves. In her case, almost everybody in her life has let her down and she cannot trust anyone, especially the authorities.
So when the first sexual assault happens, even though she knows she has undoubtable evidence, she knows it is his word against hers and that he will win. So she devises a plan to take action to ensure this will never happen again, the plan which backfires (to a degree) and results in an even more horrendous and sadistic sexual assault. After this, Lisbeth does her research. She finds that sadists need to show dominance over their victims and prove that it is them who is in charge. She uses this against him next time to get what she wants from him, her freedom, and he is left with scars that will forever label him what he is and inhibit him from living a life like the one he previously had.
