"if Salander had been an ordinary citizen, she would have most likely called the police and reported the rape as soon as she left advokat Bjurman's office. The bruises on her neck, as well as the DNA signature of his semen staining her body and clothing, would have nailed him" (p. 245). 

According to BBC news, Sweden  has seen a high rise in sex crimes over the last decade. Sweden has the highest reported amount of rapes than any other place in Europe. There are roughly 63 rapes committed for every 100,000 inhabitants. This is the second highest in the world. In 2003, 2,200 sexual offenses were reported. So why the rise? A large portion of the rise in sex crimes can be attributed to the broadening definition of what is considered to be rape in sweden.
