"Suddenly he heard a sharp crack and the grey concrete wall next to his head exploded. Then he felt the pain as fragments of concrete and shrapnel tore a deep gash in his scalp"(450). 

When Mikael is shot at while jogging, he speculates that the gunman is armed with a moose rifle, like this one. The .30 caliber is good for flat shooting, long range hunting. When loaded correctly, has a range of approximately 330 meters. This means that Mikael's attacker could have been at a very safe distance when he took the first shot. 

Each round loaded into this rifle is designed to be powerful enough to take down a 1,500lb moose. If the gunman had hit Mikael, he would have probably been killed instantly.
