"She had never brooded over whether she was straight, gay, or even bisexual." (p.357)
"Salander―unlike Mimmi―had never thought of herself as a lesbian. She had never brooded over whether she was straight, gay, or even bisexual. She did not give a damn about labels, did not see that it was anyone else's business whom she spent her nights with." (p.357)
Lisbeth does not identify to any specific sexuality. Some people may have no problem with this at all and may even fully support it, other though could have serious issues with this. In today's world and societies, it is not uncommon to find situations such as Lisbeth's. This care-free sexual thinking was able to partly come along as it did due to the work of early lesbianists and their work in separating from feminists. These women challenged the norms of feminism and rebelled by identifying as their own. They brought into perspective that sexuality is not carved in stone as many would believe and is something that is ever changing.
This idea of a fluid sexuality helped people who may be like Lisbeth and just do not care. It also could help someone who just does not know what gender they like and the pressure to classify may be a source of anxiety for them. Besides the fact that gay rights are getting closer to happening in the U.S. everyday, many people that may have been uncomfortable with people of other sexual orientations or none at all are becoming more at ease with the growing culture that is emerging. People such as Lisbeth make coming out about sexuality less stressful and not something that is taboo. This creates a more diverse culture and community, which is an extremely good thing. Diversity is the key to life.
