"The Fortress was what remained of the shoreline defense from the Second World War; concrete bunkers with trenches spread out around a command building." -Chapter 15, Page 321
Sweden During World War 2
Sweden played a very strange role as a country at this point in time. During World War II, Sweden was one of eight European nations that kept neutrality during the war. The seven other nations are: Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Andorra, Vatican City, and Liechtenstein.
However, Sweden did give aid to both the Nazi party and the Western Allies. They allowed the German to transport soldiers, howitzers, and other supplies to Finland on their railways. Sweden helped out the allies by offering United States planes to stay at Swedish bases during the liberation of Norway.
Sweden was also home to many of the Jewish and anti-fascist refugees of surrounding areas, including 8,000 Jewish refugees from Denmark that were saved from going to a concentration camp, as well as many Norwegian Jews who had fled Nazi occupied Norway.
