Salander and others in this novel are very skilled computer hackers and, in fact, this is the main reason she teams up with Blomkvist. Computer hacking allows people to gain access to other people's information, publicly or privately, and this type of information is what Blomkvist needs to solve this case.
"I had a few weeks . . . free last spring when Armansky didn't have any jobs for me, so I did some digging into Wennerstrom for fun... I have his entire hard disk on my computer. You can have as much proof as you need that he's a gangster." - Salander (Chapter 28, Page 569)

Computer Hacking:
A hacker is someone who seeks and exploits weaknesses in a computer system or computer network and may be motivated by the challenge the task presents, profits, or protest.
Hacking actually began with phone lines. It was called phone phreaking and many of those involved in this were called Yippies, a group in the 1960's credited with creating the Technological Assistance Program, or TAP, which taught techniques for unauthorized exploration of the phone network. This technique was soon translated to computers and now there are currently about 10 classifications of hacker.
