" 'You are a very ordinary little person, Mikael. You would not be able to understand the godlike feeling of having absolute control over someone's life and death' "

Martin Vanger is revealed to be a serial killer, or a 'serial rapist' or 'serial kidnapper'. Many serial killers have their own style and M. O. Martin's is kidnapping and raping women in his sex dungeon. This is not a common style, but not unheard of.
H. H. Holmes
Herman Webster Mudgett aka Dr. Henry Howard Holmes is known as the first documented Serial Killer in the US. His common prey was also women, but, his style was unique for his time.
The peak time of Herman's career was during the late 1800s early 1900s in Chicago, Illinois. During this time, there was a World's Fair: Colombian Exposition. This was where Herman would optimize on his killings as he swipe his victims from there.
What made Herman so unique?
Herman bout a lot not too fair from the fair and constructed a 3-story block long hotel, now known as the Murder Castle.

Herman bout a lot not too fair from the fair and constructed a 3-story block long hotel, now known as the Murder Castle.
During construction, Herman would constantly switch workers so that only he would know the full layout of the labyrinthine place. Many of the rooms were soundproof and hooked with gas lines which he was able to control and make his 'guest' asphyxiate. The same was done with a bank vault that he kept near his office. As if this wasn't terrible enough, on the victims that were employees of his, he would have them (as a requirement for the job) sign himself as the beneficiary of their life insurance and claim the money after killing them.
Martin Vanger claims that killing his victims was just a consequence of his actions as he would need to cover up his crime. Herman Mudgett had chutes throughout the complex that disposed of the bodies, which he would later dissect and strip of flesh, then sell the skeletons and organs to nearby universities, which he had no problem doing.
