“Around 7:00 he heard a loud meowing at the door. A reddish-brown cat slipped swiftly past him into the warmth.” (p 158)
This is Tjorven, a stray cat that lives on
Hedeby Island. Blomkvist comes in contact
with him and lets him into the guest house as
he investigates the disappearance of Harriet.
Despite being a very small part of the plot,
Blomkvist's interactions with Tjorven show
the contrast between him and Salander, as he
cannot cope with the isolation that Hedeby
features, while Salander has grown beyond the
point of acceptance of the isolation her life
provides.

Can you see Tjorven is an important plot element? Is it another element of the motif of isolation that the novel presents?
