"Taking away a person's control of her own life―meaning her bank account―is one of the greatest infringements a democracy can impose, especially when it applies to young people." (p.246)
Lisbeth Salander is forced by law to have a guardian instilled upon her. This guardian is supposed to look over all over their client's legal powers, including their money. Her previous guardian allowed her to have complete control over her life, as they had developed a very good and understand relationship with one another. He unfortunately passed away and so Lisbeth's guardianship changed hands to Advokat Nils Bjurman.
This enraged Lisbeth beyond belief. She had full control over her finances and now suddenly she was allotted a monthly allowance to cover the basics. If she wanted money she would have to ask for it, which in the case of Advokat Bjurman meant a sexual assault. Lisbeth was brought back to reality with how much her actions caused consequences that restricted her from living her life the way she wants to live it.
Now as you can see, this man is living the life he wants to live.
Many people do not realize the freedoms that they have until they are gone. This is especially true when it comes to money. Even if you are a person who hates the concept of money and thinks it only brings evil into the world, it is near impossible in this day and age to live without it.
As Wu-Tang says it, C.R.E.A.M., Cash Rules Everything Around Me. The economy influences our decisions all the time, everyday whether we realize it or not. Lisbeth did not realize this until she lost control over her money. We live in a consumerist society where material things are all around us in our everyday lives. We are surrounded by things that are influenced by money.
