Author's Purpose
Throughout the book, we've encountered a lot of incidents of rape. On the surface, the reason for these incidents is because The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is a mystery thriller book, and the incidents are all the thrilling mysteries to solve.
If you delve deeper into the novel however, you can see that the book is an examination of the violent abuse that women in Sweden suffer from. It focuses particularly on the failures of the government that permits such acts. We see this examination most graphically when Lisbeth is brutally raped by her guardian, Nils Bjurman. The author has Lisbeth put in this awful situation in order for her to have experienced this bruatlity, and come to the realization that the only effective solution to Sweden' complacency is for women to empower themselves.
What are your thoughts about why Lisbeth didn't report the incident to the police?
Does she do anything to make her stand out from the other 92% of women who don't report these assaults?
